2021–22 Ford EcoBoost Engine Recall Affects 91,000 Vehicles

Ford is one of the largest car makers in the U.S. It has produced hundreds of millions of cars during the more than 100 years the company has existed. While these vehicles are carefully inspected and tested before they are sold to the public, sometimes life-threatening problems aren’t found until after the car has been on the market for some time. Recently, an example of this arose. Ford issued a recall for the EcoBoost engine that affected thousands of vehicles that had already been sold.

Which Models Are Affected?

The recall affects 2021 and 2022 models that have 2.7-liter and 3.0-liter EcoBoost engines installed in them. These models are:

  • F-150
  • Bronco
  • Explorer
  • Edge
  • Lincoln Aviator
  • Lincoln Nautilus.

The F-150 is most affected by this recall, representing more than half the affected vehicles. Conversely, the Lincoln models are the least likely to be affected. Some models from those years may not have this engine installed. To determine whether your vehicle is affected by this Ford recall, you may need to look through the documentation that came with your vehicle or ask a mechanic whom you trust to look under the hood of your vehicle and identify what type of engine it has.

Several Ford and Lincoln models from 2021 and 2022 are affected by this recall. If you have any reason to believe your vehicle is included in this recall, you should immediately identify what type of engine it has.

When This Recall Was Issued

Ford filed recall documents with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on August 23, 2024. Letters were first sent to owners starting on October 7, 2024. Many car owners may not even have been notified yet, depending on how often they check their mail or when their letters are sent. Since this recall affects vehicles that were all produced at least two years ago, many owners may have experienced problems long before the recall was issued. If you think this defect caused an accident or other types of harm before you were notified of the recall, you may be eligible to get compensation. Our attorneys will help you determine your rights and whether you can act to pursue damages.

What the Defect Is

The defect that caused this recall is a faulty engine intake valve. This valve has the potential to fracture and may fall into the combustion chamber. If it does, it is likely to cause catastrophic engine failure. This is particularly dangerous if the engine fails at high speed. The engine failure could cause you to lose control of the vehicle and may result in a serious accident.

Spontaneous engine failure is a significant danger that can result in life-threatening accidents. If you or a loved one was seriously injured in an accident caused by a faulty EcoBoost engine, contact Neale & Fhima APC at 949-661-1007 as soon as possible to discuss your case with an experienced California car accident lawyer.

Recall Remedies

Ford is taking this recall quite seriously. It has approved several remedies for the defect. The first remedy is for anyone who has already experienced an engine failure. These owners are eligible to be reimbursed by Ford for any repairs they previously paid for. For owners who have yet to be affected by this defect, another remedy is available. The owner may bring the vehicle to a Ford dealership, where it will be inspected. If an engine fails to pass inspection, the company will replace the engine at no cost to the owner.

Why You Should Contact a Lawyer

The Ford EcoBoost engine defect can potentially affect you in several ways. If it has already caused damage to your vehicle or resulted in an accident, you should contact our law firm right away. While Ford is offering compensation for repairs already paid for, you may have difficulty getting the right amount of money. For example, Ford might deny that some repairs resulted from the defect, or you might have difficulty proving how much you spent.

Conversely, if you scrapped the vehicle or traded it in after the engine failed, you won’t have any records of payments made for repairs. However, you still suffered financially due to the defect and deserve to get compensation for that harm. Our law firm can help you determine what type of damages that Ford is liable for.

Furthermore, if you were injured in an accident caused by this defect, you might be eligible to get significant compensation for the injuries you suffered. The good news is that California law allows you to sue the responsible party in an accident and the manufacturer is responsible if an unreported defect caused the harm. The bad news is that the statute of limitations may be running out. You have only two years from the date of the accident to file a lawsuit. Since many of these vehicles are over two years old and this defect has existed the entire time, you may only have months or weeks left to file a lawsuit.

Furthermore, your vehicle may qualify under the California Lemon Law, and you may be entitled to a full refund of all the money you paid towards your vehicle, in additional incidental, consequential damage, and having your vehicle loan paid off. Call Neale & Fhima for a free consultation.
