2022-2023 Ford Mustangs Subject of Two Recall Notices

The Ford Mustang is a classic car that has been making the hearts of car lovers beat faster for decades. The modern Mustang is as much a work of art as any of its predecessors. Unfortunately, like almost every car, these vehicles are not perfect. Manufacturing defects are practically certain in modern cars because they have thousands of parts, all of which can potentially be designed or manufactured incorrectly.

In some ways, it is almost a miracle how few defects most modern vehicles have, given how many potential things could go wrong in the construction and design. If you own a 2022 or 2023 Ford Mustang, there are two recalls that you should take seriously.

Under the California Lemon Law a manufacturer may be required to offer to replace your vehicle with another equivalent vehicle, refund you the money you paid into your vehicle and pay it off, or offer you cash compensation.

How Recall Notices Are Issued

Recall notices are a way for car manufacturers to protect themselves from liability after a defect is discovered in the vehicle they produced. When any defect is discovered, the manufacturer can avoid liability if it takes responsibility for the mistake, offers reasonable ways for consumers to correct the problem at no cost, and notifies consumers about the dangers and repair options.

A recall notice is how the manufacturer notifies its customers. Once a car owner becomes aware of a recall notice, they lose the right to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer if the defect caused a car accident. However, for a manufacturer to benefit from this liability protection, it must make every reasonable effort to warn car owners about the problem. Ford issues recall notices through the NHTSA website, the Ford website, mail notices, and phone calls.

Car manufacturers like Ford are responsible for injuries caused by defects in their products. Companies can mitigate that responsibility by issuing a recall and notifying all customers of the potential danger.

Recalls for 2022 and 2023 Ford Mustangs

Two recalls are particularly meaningful for owners of 2022 and 2023 Ford Mustangs. Both of these recalls involve a defect that can easily result in a serious car accident when the vehicle is driven normally.

Loss of Steering Control

The first recall affects almost 31,000 owners of 2022-2023 Ford Mustangs. Owners of these vehicles are advised to take their cars to a dealer as soon as possible. The problem is a result of a secondary steering torque sensor that is improperly calibrated in some of the vehicles from these years. If the sensor in your vehicle is improperly calibrated, the wheel of your car may move to the side without your turning it. This sudden movement can result in an immediate crash or cause you to lose control of your vehicle.

Ford dealerships will update the software causing the problem for free, and some dealerships offer free pickup and delivery service. Additionally, if you already paid to have the problem fixed, you can request a refund for those costs from Ford.

If you are the owner of a Ford Mustang that has a manufacturer defect, you may be able to get compensation, especially if that defect resulted in harm to you or your family. Contact Neale & Fhima APC today at 949-661-1007 to schedule a consultation with an experienced attorney.

Malfunctioning Brake Fluid Level Sensors

The other major recall affects over 180,000 vehicles. In some Ford Mustangs, the brake fluid levels sensor may fail to activate the visual warning light on the dashboard when the brake fluid is low. Driving with low brake fluid is dangerous because braking performance is reduced. This means that the brakes may not stop the car as quickly as the driver expects, resulting in an accident.

Similar to the last problem, while the danger is high, the solution is relatively easy. Dealerships will update the software for free, resolving the problem. All affected owners should have received a notification letter in December 2023. However, if you did not receive a letter for any reason, that doesn’t necessarily mean your car is safe. You may want to contact a law firm to discuss your options, especially if you were involved in an accident where your brakes didn’t work as expected.
